Composition:
Each gram of Elcomed contains: 1mg mometasone furoate.
Actions:
Like other topical corticosteroids, mometasone furoate has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. The mechanism of the anti-inflammatory activity of the topical steroids, in general, is unclear. However, corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, collectively called lipocortins. It is postulated that these proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins by inhibiting the release of their common precursor arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is released from membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2.
Indication & Usage:
-Elcomed 0.1% is a corticosteroid indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
-Elcomed may be used in pediatric patients 2 years of age or older, although the safety and efficacy of drug use for children under 2 years have not been established.
Contraindications:
Elcomed is contraindicated in those patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the components in the preparation.
Precautions:
- Elcomed is to be used as directed by the physician. It is for external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes.
- It should not be used for any disorder other than that for which it was prescribed.
- The treated skin area should not be bandaged or otherwise covered or wrapped unless directed by the physician.
- Patients should report to their physician any signs of local adverse reactions.
- Elcomed should not be applied in the treatment of diaper dermatitis.
- Elcomed should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
- Elcomed should be used with caution by nursing-mothers or as directed by the physician.
Adverse reactions:
- Reported reactions included burning, pruritus, skin atrophy, tingling/stinging, and furunculosis.
- The following additional local adverse reactions have been reported infrequently with topical corticosteroids, but may occur more frequently with the use of occlusive dressings: irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, secondary infection, striae, and miliaria.
Overdosage:
Elcomed can be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects.
Dosage & Administration:
Apply a thin layer on the affected area once daily while avoiding occlusive dressings.
